ACTION Pastoral Leadership Development
“There is an average of 178,000 people coming to Christ daily around the world. Seven thousand new church leaders are needed daily to care for the growing church. Eight-five percent of the churches of the world are led by people who have no formal training in theology or ministry. Leaders from every non-Western region say their number one need is leadership training.” (Serving with Eyes Wide Open, David Livermore, P. 41)
Overwhelming Needs and Hopelessness
Many pastors and their families live on less than $1 per day and face overwhelming needs. One pastor in a refugee camp in Uganda, living in a grass hut, wanted prayer for his own family of eight and four orphans ravaged by AIDS.
One pastor in Malawi travels monthly to 60 churches he is responsible for with only his Bible and a well-worn bicycle, with little time for his family.
Worldliness and Carnality
Lacking basic Biblical training, many pastors and churches fall prey to false or inadequate teaching and worldly methods.
Pastors from the USA, Canada, and the United Kingdom sponsor and speak in conferences for equipping and encouraging needy pastors in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. They team with ACTION missionaries and local leaders to provide sound theology and much needed Biblical teaching, educational resources, and encouragement. Most conferences are one to three days and are free to the pastors and church workers as much as possible.
Many pastors and their families live on less than $1 a day. They are therefore not able to own basic ministry aids like a study Bible, concordance, or commentary. Through ACTION’s BookShare ministry, expensive Bible study and training materials are printed and distributed either free or at cost.
For example: a recent BookShare three-book set in the Philippines (valued at $30) was published for only $5. A concordance (value $18) was published for only $2, a commentary on John (value $15) for $1.50! One thousand study Bibles were recently donated to BookShare for pastors in Uganda and shipped to Africa with many other boxes of new and used books for pastors.
Missionaries to Needy Pastors
ACTION Pastoral Leadership Development missionaries serve in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. They provide ongoing training for pastors through mentoring, training seminars, and study materials. For example: one missionary couple in Manila recently had 32 pastors (and church workers) in their home (one day weekly) for 20 weeks of training in Biblical Counseling.
