Benny & Esther Goertzen

Send a Note Start a Campaign
Benny & Esther were both born and grew up in the Paraguayan Chaco. Benny’s family moved to Canada when he was 17.

Even before Benny became a Christian, he had the conviction that God wanted him to become a missionary. That his field would be Paraguay was confirmed when he became a Christian in 1968. After barely 5 years in Canada, he returned to Paraguay in 1971 with the intention to get involved in local missions. Soon doors opened for voluntary service. He went to Bible School in Asuncion for Bible and music education and got a teaching degree in Filadelfia, Chaco.

Esther’s parents were missionaries most of their lives and that also became Esther’s personal call. She made a decision for Christ as her Savior at the age of about 8 and gave Him the reigns of her life as her absolute LORD when she was about 15. Soon she knew the Lord was calling her to missions in East Paraguay and to become a school teacher. Even though she didn’t like either idea, over the following years she was eventually filled with joy and enthusiasm about it.

Benny and Esther are members of the EMB church in Filadelfia and later became associate members at Grace Church in Abbotsford, BC. They were married in 1974 and have three daughters and sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. They have been in missions most of their shared lives.

They began with teaching in a school for aboriginal children and promoting youth work and music in aboriginal communities. A semester of Communications at Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, NE, prepared Benny to serve in mission radio work in Chaco Paraguay, for 9 years. After 2 years in Canada, the EMC (Evangelical Mennonite Conference), with the support of FEBC (Fellowship of Evangelical Bible Churches) and their local church from Filadelfia, sent them to East-Paraguay in 1990 for radio evangelism where they have been active in various ministries. Together with local churches and organizations, Radio Mensajero FM was started for evangelistic purposes. Since 2009 Benny was the director of its follow-up department and Esther volunteered at seminars, teaching, and counselling. Their involvement with EMC Mission ended in October, 2015, due to a pension regulation.

Benny and Esther believe the Lord has another assignment for them in Paraguay: Use wholistic proclamation of the Gospel through media in Paraguay, providing practical programs with life changing content for radio, and possibly TV, all over East Paraguay. They hope to support and engage local churches and other Christian organizations in Paraguay in the follow-up through teaching in schools, organize seminars and provide counselling. As missionaries with Action International Ministries, they are praying and looking for partners in this ministry to make this vision a reality.
