As you may know, I attend Augusta University’s Nursing School and plan to graduate in May 2020 with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Since I can remember, I have always dreamed of being a labor and delivery nurse. In addition, my local church has taught me what it looks like to glorify the Lord through my life and has always encouraged the saying, “Do what you are good at for the glory of God, somewhere strategic for the mission of God.” It has been my prayer that the Lord would provide an opportunity that allows me to live out this phrase this summer. More specifically, I have prayed for an opportunity that would both equip and teach me skills for my future while also advancing His kingdom through missions.

Through the Lord’s faithfulness, a great opportunity has been given to me this summer to join the mission at Shalom Birthing Center in Antipolo City, Philippines, through Action International Ministries as a nursing intern. Shalom was founded by a retired missionary and now they see approximately 60-100 births per month and over 300 women each week for routine prenatal care! Not only does Shalom provide care for these women physically, but they partner with local churches to connect them to Bible studies for the carrying mothers, their children, and now also their husbands.

June and July, I will be serving with two other nursing interns partnering with 40 nurses and midwives at the birthing center. During my time at Shalom, I will be assisting with prenatal/postnatal check-ups, births, bathing newborns, immediate postpartum care, etc. My other time will include prenatal outreach, home-visits, community Bible Studies, forming relationships with the women at the center, and being trained on medical missions.

This internship is a literal dream come true for me and words would never adequately describe how excited and expectant I am for this opportunity. I will learn the beauty of birth, the pain of poverty, and how a gracious God works through both for His glory. I know I will gain experience that will impact my career/life forever.
