We both grew up in the Midwest – Derek in Neenah, WI and Kristin in Mt. Pleasant, MI. God increased our passion for cross-cultural missions after going on short-term mission trips (Derek to Thailand in 2001 and 2002 and Kristin to Kenya in 2000). Then, during what was supposed to be our college years, we each chose to spend one and a half years in Lusaka, Zambia with ACTION Zambia (AZ), which is where we met. We spent time working primarily with street kids and some with HIV/AIDS. It was in Zambia that God gave Derek the desire to pursue a Biblical Studies degree and Kristin the desire to become a Registered Nurse. After returning to the Midwest and getting married in 2006 and then finishing college, we soon realized that our hearts were back in Africa. We pursued various opportunities to work with HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, but none excited us like returning to Zambia with ACTION to lead the C.R.O.S.S. Project HIV/AIDS Ministry.
We served on the ACTION Zambia team as coordinators of the C.R.O.S.S. Project from January 2011 to June 2016. From February 2015 to July 2017, Derek served as the ACTION Zambia Country Director. In August 2017, we returned to the States with a change of ministry focus. Derek was asked to step into a new role within ACTION, and he is now serving with the ACTION USA team as an Associate Director with an emphasis on strategic planning. Derek and Kristin have two sons, Charlie and Sam.
Derek and Kristin’s primary sending and home church is Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN. Derek holds a Bachelors of Science in Biblical Studies degree from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL. Kristin holds an Associates of Science in Nursing (RN) from Normandale Community College, Bloomington, MN.
