Mike & Cindy Gingerich

Realizing the seriousness of the great commission, Mike and Cindy moved away from their Mennonite roots to share Christ’s love with Filipinos. They have worked among the urban poor of Metro Manila, Philippines since 1999. Mike grew up in Ohio and was raised in a Christian family. He accepted Christ when he was 17 after hearing the gospel presented on the radio. The following two summers he ministered in Haiti with Teen Missions International. There he became increasingly convinced that God was calling him to missions among the poor. After graduating from Rosedale Bible College, Mike spent three years serving with Rosedale Mennonite Missions living and working in an inner city African American community in Jackson, Mississippi. This experience developed his carpentry skills and gave him further ministry experience among the poor. Cindy was born and raised in a loving Christian family in Iowa. She accepted Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade at the age of 12. Seeing the need for Bible training she attended Rosedale Bible College where she met Mike. Wanting to experience ministry and service, Cindy spent a year in Eldorado, Arkansas, as a teacher’s aide in a multi-handicapped classroom. While in Arkansas, Cindy heard a nurse share about a medical missions trip. It was at this program that she sensed God’s direction to medical missions among the poor. She graduated from Kirkwood Community College in 1988 with an RN degree. Mike and Cindy were married in June of 1988 and continued to seek God’s leading concerning missions and their future. God’s direction toward Manila’s urban poor came in 1990 when they heard a couple from Overseas Missionary Fellowship share about their work there. Feeling the need for further training and experience, the Gingeriches attended Columbia International University where Mike received his B.S. in Intercultural Studies in 1995. After three and one-half years of support raising, the Gingeriches came to the Philippines in January 1999, serving under Action International Ministries. After two years of studying Tagalog, the national language, Mike began working with the ministry of Village Handcrafters. This unique ministry provided much needed jobs in squatter communities and set aside profits to cover salaries for pastors working in urban poor church plants. Mike worked with these pastors and also as an assistant director at Village Handcrafter’s handmade paper and soap factory. When this ministry closed its doors in 2010, Mike took on the role of Field Director for ACTION Philippines and served in the role until 2019. Mike has also restarted a small paper making livelihood project providing jobs for half-a-dozen men in the community. Cindy’s ministry is at Action’s birthing center, the Shalom Birthing Home, in Antipolo City. She helps with pre- and post-natal checkups for the 30 to 40 patients who deliver their babies at Shalom each month. These mothers live in nearby squatter areas. Mothers are charged a total fee of around $12 which covers their delivery and all their pre- and post-natal visits. Cindy's real joy is in seeing some of these new mothers experience a spiritual new birth when they hear the message of the gospel as it is presented to them during their time at Shalom. The Gingeriches have four children, Moriah (10-29-90), Micah (8-1-92), Lydia (8-18-94), and Cana (10-14-96). Only their oldest is still with them in the Philippines. After playing and graduating from the University of the Philippines, Moriah has been working as an assistant basketball coach. His position has opened many doors for ministry.Your prayers for Mike and Cindy are much appreciated as they make plans to move back to the USA (Iowa) in April of 2020. Thank you.
