Greetings Friends, Family and Potential Readers,
My name is Laura Helstad. I grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin, but I have since crossed the border into Minnesota where I am currently in my senior year in the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program at Bethel University in St. Paul, MN. I plan to graduate in the spring of 2017. I have really enjoyed my time at Bethel and have grown a lot from the wonderful professors and opportunities to learn and stretch myself, including caring for diverse populations of patients in the Twin Cities community, including: those that are homeless, immigrants, those in poverty, single parents, and others who have less opportunity to receive quality health care. Studying nursing has become more than just about a future career, but also a ministry and a way to be the hands and feet of Christ to those I am able to care for. I am thankful for the faith-based education I have been able to receive, learning how to apply my faith in Christ to the field of nursing while caring for patients in a diverse array of settings.
Since feeling led to study nursing, I have also felt passionate about medical missions. Midwifery, labor and delivery, maternal and child health have always been areas of interest that I have felt passionate about within the health field. I am excited that God has opened the door for me to serve at the Shalom Christian Birthing Center in Antipolo City in the Philippines for the month of January 2017 with ACTION missionary nurse and midwife Pami Ellis. During my time there I will be assisting in delivering babies to mothers and families in need of love, care, and medical intervention. I will also be assisting with pre- and post-natal checkups for infants and their amazing mothers. Other time will be spent spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. I am blessed to be a part of a team to advocate for The Lord.
I invite you to be a part of this journey in whatever way the Lord calls you to— whether that be through a financial donation, prayer, or sending a personal message. Everything helps and I am grateful for all of the support from each and every one of you. I will post updates and news on my journey leading up to and during my month-long experience in the Philippines on my blog website https://withoutborders19.wordpress.com/. God bless and thank you for all of your prayers, support, and encouragement.
