Relief Efforts Needed in Aftermath of Super Typhoon Rai

Relief Efforts Needed in Aftermath of Super Typhoon Rai

Last Thursday, super typhoon Rai smashed the Visayan region of the central Philippines. She packed 160 mph winds killing at least 375 people and caused devastating widespread destruction and damage. More than fifty people are still missing, and 200 towns and cities lost their electricity. As the storm pounded the Visayas, more than 400,000 people moved to evacuation shelters. This is the fifteenth and strongest typhoon to hit the country this year. Communication gaps mean that the number of deaths could increase as more information comes in from battered provinces like Bohol, Cebu, Surigao del Norte and Leyte. Rescuers picked up thousands of people in flooded areas who climbed onto roofs and into trees as waters rose.

Since 2013, when a 7.2 earthquake rocked Bohol and super typhoon Hiayan steamrolled the Visayas region, ACTION Philippines has done extensive gospel-centered relief and development work in the region. We have many good friends and faithful ministry partners in the area. Additionally, we have partnered with churches to have evangelistic Christmas parties, Feed My Starving Children feeding programs, conferences for pastors and church leaders, and weeks-long discipleship ministry for men and women. My heart is broken over their plight. Here we go again!

The urgent need now is drinking water, nonperishable food, getting power back, and rebuilding. ACTION personnel are trying to communicate with our friends and partners to know how they are and how we can help them survive and recover. In the meantime, men and women in Manila I have served with for decades in disaster response are putting together a plan and budget.

ACTION Philippines needs funds for their relief and development operations when they are ready to roll. Pray please about giving a generous financial gift for our ministry of compassion. If the Spirit leads you to give, you can send a check to the ACTION office nearest you or give online below.

Our motivating verses for years in this ministry are Galatians 6:9-10, And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith."
