Philippines: Shalom Christian Birthing Home Operating Expenses

Send a Note Start a Campaign

The Shalom Christian Birthing Home invites you to join ACTION’s team, delivering hope among the neglected poor through evangelism, discipleship, and quality maternity care.

A Vision is Born

Shalom Christian Birthing Home was established by ACTION missionary, Mavis Orton, a retired nurse/midwife from England. Observing the exceptionally high maternal and infant mortality rates in the outskirts of Manila, Mavis opened her home to these at-risk mothers in order to provide a safe and dignified environment for childbirth. Nearby churches work closely with Shalom’s staff – resulting in many mothers and their families experiencing spiritual rebirth and becoming active in a local church.

ACTION missionary nurse, Cindy Gingerich joined Shalom in 2002 and is also currently giving leadership to the ministry.

Birth of a Team

In addition to missionary nurse Cindy, Shalom has 14 full-time staff including midwives, nurses, a chaplain, a finance officer, maintanance staff, and church volunteers who assist with evangelism.

Growing Pangs

During its first month of operation, eight babies were delivered at the birthing home. At it's peak, Shalom delivered 180 babies a month. Currently, approximately 30-40 babies are born at Shalom each month.

Patients are asked to donate around $12 to help cover the expenses of their prenatal, delivery and postnatal care at Shalom.
