Brazil: ABBA - Children in Care

Send a Note Start a Campaign
God “places the lonely in families” (Ps. 68:5).

History and Background:

Projeto Pérolas and Casa Elohim are programs of ABBA which is a ministry founded in 1993 as a means to show God’s love to the thousands of children and adolescents living on the streets in the impoverished urban sprawl of São Paulo, Brazil. During its first decade ABBA developed several different homes to care for these children and reach their families. As needs changed, ABBA focused its residential care efforts into Casa Elohim in 2005 and began to work in the development of foster care in the country. This pioneering effort grew into a registered foster care program (Projeto Pérolas) in 2009. Through foster and residential care, ABBA has served over 200 abandoned, abused and neglected children and their families since its founding.

What is the ministry doing now?

Casa Elohim currently serves ten children, both boys and girls, of all ages. Many of the children who live at Casa Semear have complex needs due to living on the streets, abandonment by their parents or having faced trauma and abuse. The team at Casa Semear seeks to meet their spiritual, physical and emotional needs and reach their families, reintegrating them into the family of origin (including relatives) where possible or preparing them for adoption.

Projeto Pérolas (The Pearl Project) has the unique status of being the first foster care program in the entire city of São Paulo. To this day it continues to serve as a cutting-edge ministry that challenges the traditional mold of caring for children in orphanages, recognizing the benefits of family life in the healing and developmental process. We believe that Jesus Christ´s body has a fundamental role to play in responding to the crisis of children in need and we are actively involved in challenging the Brazilian church to be His heart, hands and feet to transform individual lives and the whole of society.

Future Goals:

Our fundamental task is to show God´s love to each child that God brings to us and so our first goal is always to make that individual difference. We also see ourselves as a catalyst to the Brazilian Church fulfilling its obligation to reaching needy children and their families.Through the many opportunities to share in local churches, we envision the involvement of the church in the formation and resourcing of many other foster and residential care programs to care for abandoned, abused and neglected children.
